Your First Year

Any college student will tell you that the first year is exciting, eye-opening and, in many ways, transformative. Or at least, that’s how it is here.

At Agnes Scott, we make sure that your first year is an authentic introduction to our community and to SUMMIT—our signature approach to the liberal arts.

In your first year as a Scottie, you will make new friends, explore new ideas and fall in love with Atlanta. Here is a snapshot of your first-year experience:

Before your first classes begin…

you will be contacted by your SUMMIT Advisor. They are professional advisors whose sole purpose is to help you chart and navigate your academic pathway throughout your four years at Agnes Scott. You will also meet your SUMMIT Peer Advisor, a trained upperclass student who will help you adjust to social and academic life on campus.

During orientation…

you will form connections with your peers and begin cultivating your own leadership style by participating in small-group work and reflective activities through LEGACY: the GOIZUETA FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP IMMERSION.

One of your first courses in the fall…

will be LDR 101: Foundational Skills Seminar, a seminar for first-year students, where you will learn about the Agnes Scott approach to leadership and the liberal arts. You will also take GBL 101: Gateways, a highly interactive course featuring panels on world issues and exploratory trips into Atlanta.

In the spring…

you will share a cultural immersion experience with your classmates in GBL 102: Journeys, an eight-day, faculty-led event. Likewise, you will take LDR 102: Leadership Lab, a course designed to explore how different liberal arts disciplines can be applied to real-world situations.

Throughout the year…

you will also begin general education course work, covering social sciences, natural sciences, humanities and more, with an emphasis on global learning and leadership development.
